ISU has been on Fonua's mind

David Fonua grew up watching former ISU players Hiawatha Rutland, Johnny Smith and Marc Timmons play for Southeast High School in Bradenton, Fla. and now possibly has a chance to follow in their footsteps.

Iowa State along with Kentucky, Alabama, Temple, FAM U and Florida Atlantic have also offered the defensive end.

"Iowa State has been on my mind a lot," Fonua said.

Fonua said coach Chris Ash told him he'd visit him within the next couple of weeks and they were going to set up a time for Fonua to visit Iowa State.

The 6-foot-2, 250 pound Fonua had 70 tackles and 7.5 sacks last season; he runs a 4.9/40.

Fonua said he's not sure what position he'll play in college.

"It's wherever the coaches want me," he said. "It's probably defensive end or linebacker."

Fonua said he is looking for a college with a good athletic program as well as a good academic school; he's thinking about majoring in criminology.

Last year Fonua's team finished the season 9-2 and he said they have the potential to be just as good as a year ago if they unite as a team.

"Right now my goal is getting the team together," Fonua said. "We suffered a loss last week, so I just want to get the team together. We got the talent it to make it the whole way, but we're not together yet."
