CN's Pick 5!

This week the CN Staff picks their five winners and losers of the weekend. A running total will be kept all season long and the last place winner gets a congratulatory case of Natty Lite.

Iowa State over Army...It will be somewhat sloppy, but the Cyclones by far have the better talent and will get the job done.

Ohio State over Iowa...The Hawkeyes have only won twice at the Horseshoe since 1959, and you have to think the Buckeyes have had this game circled after the beating they took in Iowa City last year.

Miami, Fla. over Colorado...The Buffaloes can physically hang in here, but they don't have the skill position talent to pull off the upset.

LSU over Tennessee...The Volunteers follow a trip to Gainesville with a jaunt to Baton Rouge, and they still don't know who their starting quarterback is.

Virginia Tech over Georgia Tech...I'd be tempted to take the Yellow Jackets if I knew that Reggie Ball was healthy.

Iowa State over Army…Does anyone else think that this may be a trap game since Army lost their home opener to Baylor? I certainly hope not as the Cyclones step into the national spotlight and need to create the same energy as they had against Iowa or this will be a dogfight. Army does have a good running back in Carlton Jones who gained over 80 yards against Baylor. Baylor seems improved but the Cyclone defense is more motivated since the Illinois St. game and will contain Jones. Let's hope Stevie doesn't need Coleman to spark some life in his running and sets a tone early. Hicks will get 150 yards and look for the tight ends to be very effective against a defense that is still finding themselves. Cyclones head to Lincoln 3-0 winning 34-14.

Ohio State over IowaIf the Hawkeyes couldn't control Dobbins & company then they sure will have their hands full with AJ Hawk and Bobby Carpenter. The Buckeyes seek revenge in losing at Iowa last year and not looking good in Iowa City. Iowa hasn't faired that well in Columbus and this time is no different. Drew Tate gets flustered again and needs to stay healthy to avoid any more concussions. Cyclone fans know that a victory over Iowa is still good to help us in the polls. That game is over, now it's the conference races. Buckeyes pressure Tate all day and win 26-13.

Miami, Fla. over ColoradoThank goodness that kicker Mason Crosby is still on the Buffs roster as they will need his leg in this one. Colorado has some good linebackers in Brian Iwuh, Thaddeaus Washington and Jordon Dizon which will keep pressured with the blitz against an offensive line for Miami that gave up nine sacks against Florida St. It's been awhile since Colorado has been back to Miami and unfortunately it will be a long trip home. Hurricanes win this one 27-13.

LSU over TennesseeI made the mistake in picking Tennessee last week against Florida. They were not impressive at all in the passing game or offensively at all. Coach Fulmer doesn't know who to play at quarterback and it doesn't get easier this week. Look for more points out of Tennessee but not enough as the Tigers keep their emotional season perfect 31-20.

Virginia Tech over Georgia Tech…Marcus Vick shows that his older brother isn't the only Vick with speed and accuracy. Georgia Tech could be a sleeper in the ACC, but to play at the Hokies this early is no easy task. Look for special teams to decide this one as Va Tech knows how to create instant points in that department. Hokies win 24-14.

Iowa State over Army…I think ISU might come out a little sloppy, but will be the Cyclones we saw against Iowa mid-first quarter. ISU 24 Army 3.

Ohio State over IowaIf it was at Kinnick I might lean the other way, but I'm going with Ohio State 28-24.

Miami, Fla. over ColoradoIt will be a good test for the Buffs, but Miami comes out on top 35-24.

LSU over TennesseeI would just like to point out that Tennessee has a qb named Jim Bob Cooter. Tigers by 14.

Virginia Tech over Georgia Tech…Vick is the difference as the Hokies when by a TD.

Andrew Swan, CN Staff Writer

Iowa State over Army…Although I spent eight years wearing the uniform, I have to go against Army in this one. They do not have a good team. ISU by 20+.

Iowa over Ohio StateIowa has always struggled in the ‘Shoe, and this year will be no different. However, the Hawks will finish strong and squeak out a shocker, 31-28.

Colorado over Miami, FlaMy heart goes with Colorado. Not so much for giving out love for the Big 12, but more for the fact that I have never, and will never cheer for the ‘Canes. Colorado by 10.

LSU over Tennessee…LSU has been my second favorite team for years. With the hardships faced by the people of the Gulf Coast, LSU is my sentimental favorite as well. LSU by 7.

Virginia Tech over Georgia Tech…With a Vick in the backfield, it's hard to go against VaTech. The Ramblin' Wreck will crash and burn in the Old Dominion. VaTech by 21.

Iowa State over Army…Iowa State is just plain the better team but don't look for this one to be a blowout.  Army will play with a lot of heart and Mac just isn't the kind of guy to run up the score.  Iowa State wins but doesn't cover the spread.

Ohio State over IowaI still have plenty of questions about Iowa especially on the offensive and defensive lines.  I think Ohio State will get pressure on Tate forcing some turnovers and Iowa's defensive line just won't cut it against a team as talented as Ohio State.  Ted Ginn will cause major problems for Iowa's defense and Ohio State wins this game but the score will be close.

Miami (Fla.) over ColoradoAs much as I would like to pick a fellow Big 12 team I just think Miami is too talented for Colorado.  Miami wins this game by at least a touchdown.

LSU over TennesseeMy gut tells me to pick Tennessee in this one but my brain is telling me Tennessee still has problems with their quarterback situation.  I'm just not sold on either of Tennessee's quarterbacks and LSU is playing with a little extra motivation for their entire state so even though my gut says Tennessee I'm going to take LSU in a close game.

Virginia Tech over Georgia Tech…With Reggie Ball being questionable for this game I have no choice but to pick Virginia Tech.  Georgia Tech has a good defense and has a lot of weapons but Ball's playing status just forces me to take Virginia Tech.

Mark Hersom                        14-4

Amanda Ouverson               13-5
