ISU Downs Oklahoma; Sets School Record

The Iowa State volleyball team got 11 kills and 11 block assists from Jessica Klein to defeat Oklahoma, 3-1 (30-24, 31-29, 28-30, 30-28), and break the school record for Big 12 wins in a season.

Iowa State out-hit Oklahoma, .277 to .230, and had 16.5 team blocks in the match.


"I thought that it was a great road win for us," said head coach Christy Johnson. "We knew that Oklahoma was a very dangerous team when they ball handled well and they did just that. We had to respond and I am happy to get the win."


With the win, ISU improves to 12-8 overall and 5-4 in Big 12 play. Oklahoma falls to 5-13 overall and 0-9 in conference play.


After falling behind 19-14, ISU chipped away at the Sooner lead and captured the first game 30-24 on a pair of aces by Katie Jessen. Iowa State out-hit Oklahoma, .125 to .031, en route to taking a 1-0 lead in the match.


Katie Jessen had five second game kills as Iowa State hung on to win the second game 31-29. With the Cyclones leading 29-25, Oklahoma scored the next four points to even the score. The Cyclones scored the next two points to win the game and go up 2-0 in the match.


ISU hit .237 in game two and added five blocks.


Oklahoma won the third game, 30-28, behind eight kills from Eliane Santos. The Cyclones out-hit the Sooners, .323 to .273, but were unable to pick up the sweep as Oklahoma held on to force a fourth game.


In game four, ISU was forced to come from behind as they scored the final three points to win 30-28 and win the match, 3-1.


Katie Jessen had 18 kills and Nicole Lorenzen chipped in 16 of her own to lead the Cyclones. Boeve also reached double figures with 10 kills in the win.


Eliane Santos had a match-high 21 kills for the Sooners.


Iowa State will face Big 12 foe Kansas on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
