Minnesota state tennis champion Alyssa Palen has signed a letter of intent to play collegiately at Iowa State in 2006-07, head coach Michele Conlon announced today.

"We are thrilled to have Alyssa join our tennis program," Conlon said. "Not only will our program benefit from her estensive tennis experience, she is a perfect fit with our team and we cannot wait to get her here on campus."

Palen, a senior at Lourdes High School in Rochester, Minn., was runner-up state singles champ as a junior and captured the state singles crown as a senior. She also earned the state doubles title as a sophomore. She has ranked as high as second in the USTA Northern Section and is No. 164 nationally for girls under 18.

Palen participated in several 2005 USTA national tournaments, including the USTA National Open. She also played in the National Hard Courts (San Jose, Calif.) and Junior Fed (Danville, Calif.) competitions.

"Certainly, having someone like Alyssa will help in our recruiting for the spring signing," Conlon said. "She will be an outstanding teammate."

Palen's sister Jill is a junior at Iowa State and is the Cyclones' No. 1 singles player. Her sister Lyndsey plays for Gustavus Adolphus, where she won a Division III national doubles title in 2005.

"I'm so excited to have Alyssa become a member of the ISU tennis team," Jill said. "I have enjoyed my experience here so much and I absolutely love the team. I am thrilled for her because I know that she'll fit in and love it here too. I'm glad she chose to come to Iowa State and I hope that she can get as much out of her experiences as I have."
