Iowa State Beats Mountain State 101-82

Iowa State got their season off to a great start on Sunday night with a 101-82 victory over Mountain State. The Cyclones will play Wendesday night as they take on Portland State in the first round of the Cyclone Invitational.

Iowa State-101 Mountain State- 82

1st Half Notes:

ISU Starters:

Curtis Stinson

Ross Marsden

Will Blalock

Rahshon Clark

Anthony Davis

*I was a little surprised to see Davis in the starting lineup but I like it. I think he's going to be a big part of this team's success this year.

*In the first 5 minutes of the game, the intensity isn't even close to the exhibitions. This looks like a different team. The bench is even more energetic.

*Taggart entered in the first five minutes. He looked extremely skinny and got extremely gassed. He then picked up a couple of buckets and really looked a lot better.

*In the first eight minutes, Iowa State has drawn three charges. That's a nice little stat.

*I've said it before and I'll keep saying it. Rahshon Clark will go down as the most electric player in Iowa State history. This crowd just loves him. Rahshon had a absolutely sick rebound put back for a dunk with about nine minutes left in the first half.

*The offensive rebounding is the biggest improvement so far in the first half. It's a brand new dimension to this team that Cyclone fans didn't see at all during the exhibitions.

*This team just looks more confident when Taggart is on the floor. Everybody looks more confident. The more minutes he plays, the more confident Taggart is looking.

*I think it's going to be huge for Iowa State to have some sort of an inside game with Anthony Davis this year. Even if he's not shooting down there, it's going to open up the outside game for everybody else. Davis has some posting up ability.

*Iowa State's backcourt really is one of the best in the nation. The hustle from all of these guys has been excellent so far in the first half.

End of the First Half Notes:

Score: ISU- 52 Mountain State- 37

*Shawn Taggart is no Jared Homan yet, but he does bring some things to the table that Homan didn't. For instance, this kid runs like a guard. Stinson has 20 points at halftime. His career high is 32. Looks like it could be a career night for Curtis. The most impressive thing about Stinson's first half is that he has ZERO turnovers and four assists. This is the 18th time Curtis has scored 20 points in a game. This team looked like a top 25 team in the first half and fans should be very happy so far.

Second Half Notes:

*Iowa State had about eight dunks in 30 seconds it seemed like. This team is so exciting to watch and Rahshon Clark is flat out showing off now. What a tremendous athlete!

*Curtis Stinson is a man amongst boys out here. I'm extremely impressed with the way he is passing the ball tonight.

*If there was a "Mr. Hustle" award for the first three games, Tasheed Carr would have to win it.

*The one thing that keeps bothering me tonight is the fact that the Cyclones aren't doing a great job of blocking out on either side of the ball. I'm sure that will be addressed in the days to come.

*Iowa State just can't put these guys away. It's a ten point game with seven minutes to go and State realistically should be up by 20.

*Mountain State is like a 7th grade softball team. They are actually starting their own defense chant on the bench. It's alright though. I like it, shows that they care.

*Curtis Stinson just got his career high, 33 points and the place is going crazy.

*With 3:21 left, Iowa State is up 90-76. I really like the fact that it's a close enough game that State can keep playing their starters and get some more chemistry.

Final Score: Iowa State- 101 Mountain State- 82

*Curtis Stinson scored 35 points. This is the 40th time in Cyclone history that a Cyclone has scored 35 points or more. That is the most points scored by a Cyclone since Fizer on March 10, of 2000. Fizer had 38 against Baylor.

*This crows is now excited about basketball. They should be because this team is extremely fun to watch and with the development of Hubalek and Taggart, can go very far.
