The fifth-ranked Iowa State wrestlers suffered their first loss of the season at the hand of intra-state rival No. 7 Iowa, 20-15, Friday night in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones fall to 3-1 overall while the Hawkeyes improve to 2-0. ISU's Nate Gallick, Trent Paulson, Travis Paulson and Joe Curran recorded wins.

"We lost the battle of skill but we had the will," head coach Bobby Douglas said. "We need to improve on controlling tie-ups and technique. I'm proud of the effort we put forth but Iowa is a strong program."

Gallick, ranked second in the country at 141 pounds, downed Iowa's No. 12 Alex Tsirtsis, 4-1, after the Cyclones had fallen behind 10-0. Gallick defeated Tsirtsis, the 2005 Kaufman-Brand runner-up twice last season.

Trent and Travis Paulson, ranked second and sixth in the nation, each remained undefeated at 157 and 165 pounds (13-0). Trent beat Iowa's third-ranked All-American Joe Johnston, 8-3, for his fourth win over the 2005 NCAA runner-up in his career. Travis beat Iowa's Cole Pape, 8-4, at 165 pounds.

"I came away with a win," Trent said. "I trained hard and I win when it counts. I feel confident on my feet but I still respect him (Johnston)."

Curran, a true freshman, registered his third pin of the season at 197 pounds over Adam Fellers and has pinned both of his opponents in two home dual starts.

The Cyclones will be competing at the UNI Open tomorrow in Cedar Falls before heading to Minnesota to face the sixth-ranked Gophers Dec. 9.
