Wrestling Preview: ISU to Take on Gophers

Iowa State will take on Minnesota in wrestling on Friday night. Iowa State heads into the competition ranked 5th nationally while Minnesota is currently ranked 6th.

Bobby Douglas and the 5th ranked Iowa State wrestling team (3-1) will try to

refocus after a loss to instate rival Iowa and bring down the #6 Minnesota

Gophers (5-0). The Cyclones put forth a great effort against Iowa but just

couldn't pull through with some of their more inexperienced wrestlers.

Douglas believes that these early meets and tournaments will help get some of

his young wrestlers some much needed experience and will hopefully pay off in

the end. Wrestlers like Joe Curran (197) and Ben Hanisch (125) have shown

promise but they need to build off that and keep improving every day.

Some key matches will be #8 C.P. Schlatter and #2 Trent Paulson squaring off

at 157 lbs while Trent's twin brother Travis Paulson (#6) squares off against

5th ranked Matt Nagel of Minnesota at 165 lbs. Also, #3 Kurt Backes matches up

with #6 Roger Kish at 184 lbs.

Team captain, Nate Gallick will try to retain his #1 ranking as he takes on

Manual Rivera at 14l lbs. Gallick has dominated Rivera in the past but Rivera

has already wrestled 17 matches this year and is off to a good 12-5 mark.

Gallick and the rest of the Iowa State wrestling team know that this is a

major test for them in a tough Minnesota environment but they will be ready.
