Courtside Notes: Tough Loss for the Cyclones

Iowa State took it's third loss of the season tonight to and undefeated Ohio State squad. Here are notes taken from the game by Chris Williams and Brent Blum.

Pre-game Notes:

*Iowa State has never beaten Ohio State. Ohio State holds a 3-0 edge on the Cyclones. The last time these two teams met was in 1985 in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

*The Wells Fargo Center filled up nicely as the women's game ended. It was pretty much full at tip-off other than some blank areas in the upper deck behind the buckets.

1st Half Notes:

*Ross Marsden scored Iowa State's first bucket of the game on a lay-up. It's great to see Ross get off to a good start.

*It's taking the players some time to adjust to depth perception of the larger arena. The first four minutes were pretty sloppy by both teams. Much like we saw during the women's game against UNI earlier.

*Iowa State needs to stop J.J. Sullinger on the drive. If he continues to get to the basket it could be a long night for the Cyclones. As Brent Blum said, he's like a left-handed Curtis Stinson.

*With 11:55 to go in the first half, Shawn Taggart scored 6 points in a 3 minute span, but he also gave up 4 points on the other end. That's why he's no longer in the ball game.

*With 11:28 to go Tasheed Carr had a sick pass to Jiri Hubalek. Hubalek is quickly becoming a fan favorite at Iowa State. Hubalek is so skilled at catching and shooting in one motion. He makes it look simple.

*With 8 minutes to go in the 1st half Rahshon Clark threw down another one of his absolutely ridiculous dunks. This one was on a fast break and honestly it wasn't that impressive, except when Clark does it. This player has the ability to completely hold the Iowa State crowd in the palm of his hands.

*Ohio State is going to have to start doubling Taggart in the post. He is too skilled to be handled by one Buckeye defender.

*Taggart lost responsibility on the zone rotation leaving an open 3. Too often he relaxes on defense.

*I know it seems like we're talking a lot about Taggart but Ohio State has to start guarding this guy. Taggart just hit a 20 foot jumper like it was nothing. He shows signs of brilliance offensively. With 3:58 to go in the first half, Taggart already has 12 points.

*Rahshon Clark hit a buzzer beater to end the 1st half and the Wells Fargo Center sounded like Hilton Coliseum for the first time tonight.

Halftime Score: Iowa State 39 Ohio State 32

Notable Stats:

*Shawn Taggart leads Iowa State at the half with 12 points and 3 rebounds.

*Will Blalock and Jiri Hubalek both have 6 points at the half. Blalock also has 5 assists at the half.

*At the half, Iowa State has 22 points in the paint compared to Ohio State's 10.

*Iowa State has 16 bench points compared to Ohio State's 3.

2nd Half:

*At the 17 minute mark of the 2nd half, Ohio State's Je' Kel Foster has 6 3's and 20 points on the game.

*With 15:13 to go in the 2nd half, Iowa State leads by a score of 44-42. Foster and Dials have 75% of OSU's points.

*With 15 minutes to go, Taggart was on the floor scrapping for a ball and I saw a grimace on his face. It looked like he may have aggravated his hip.

*With 13:55 to go, OSU has gone on a 16-6 run to start the 2nd half. The score is 48 to 45 in favor of OSU.

*Clark swatted a shot out of bounds then dove after it into the Pom-squad. I don't blame him. I guess that's the meaning of the term "hustle."

*Clark needs to stop showing off. The place erupted after a lob and dunk. Wells Fargo about came crumbling down. If Clark continues, this beautiful facility may not last long. 10-0 run for the Clones.

*With 10:02 to go, not a single person has sat down since Clark's dunk. I actually saw 2 kids in Cyclone Alley bowing to him.

*Ohio State's Matt Sylvester thought he was fouled on one end, complained to ref Steve Olson, then was beat down the floor for a lay-up by Curtis Stinson.

*With 6:00 on the clock, ISU is up 8. Free throw shooting will be the key down the stretch. The Cyclones are shooting under 65 percent as a team this year.

*Taggart was benched after giving up four points in one minute. He has scored only 1 point since half.

*Those in attendance remembered to bring along their ability to give the officials the business. There's nothing like a house full of boo's after a tough call. I bet Paul McCartney didn't take that much heat at Wells Fargo.

* Under 4:00…..2 point game. It's Curtis Stinson time.

*13-4 run by the Bucks, they take a 2 point lead. ISU needs to develop a killer instinct.

FINAL SCORE: Ohio State 70 Iowa State 67

*Last four possessions for Iowa State….only one time did Stinson touch the ball. The time he touched it, he went to the line.

*Ohio State made 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch in a hostile environment. Good savvy ball club.

*Tough loss for ISU…they controlled the first 35 minutes, but couldn't close the deal. Come Big 12 time, this experience should come into play. But, this one should have been a W.

Notable Stats:

*Curtis Stinson had 17 points and was 6-17 from the field.

*Will Blalock had 10 points and 6 assists.

*Shawn Taggart had 13 points and 5 rebounds.

*Rahshon Clark had 11 points and 3 rebounds.

*Jiri Hubalek had 10 points and 6 rebounds.
