Cyclones Victorious in Opening Round

A recap of last nights game.

HONOLULU (AP) - Rahshon Clark had 19 points to lead four Cyclones in double figure as Iowa State beat South Florida 83-74 Wednesday night in the final game of the opening round of the Rainbow Classic.

Will Blalock had 16 points and 10 assists for Iowa State (7-3). Curtis Stinson added 13 points for the Cyclones and John Neal 11.

McHugh Mattis led all scorers with 23 points for South Florida (5-4), shooting a tournament record 10-for-10 from the field. James Holmes added 20 points and Melvin Buckley 19 for the Bulls.

South Florida took a 57-55 lead on Holmes' 3-pointer from the right side with 9:35 remaining in the game.

But back-to-back Bulls turnovers and 3-pointers from Iowa State's Stinson and Jiri Hubalek keyed a 10-0 Cyclone run and South Florida would get no closer than four down the stretch.

South Florida shot 61.4 percent from the field (27-of-44) but committed 25 turnovers in the game.

South Florida led by as many as 12 points with 4:31 left in the first half. But Iowa State closed out the first with an 18-2 run, capped by Clark's 3-pointer from the left wing at the first half buzzer, to take a 41-37 lead.

The Cyclones play Northwestern State tomorrow (Dec. 22) at 9 p.m. (CST).
