The seventh-ranked Iowa State (4-2, 0-0) wrestlers opened the 43rd Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., Thursday afternoon by recording 13 wins, seven which resulted in bonus points, and advancing four to Thursday night's quarterfinal round. The Cyclones recorded three pins, three major decisions and one technical fall, putting them in second place with 29 points after the first session of competition at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Illinois is currently in first place with 31 points.
"We had some good performances," head coach Bobby Douglas said. "Our guys are wrestling well, although we have made some mistakes that cost us some matches. We'll come back strong. The four we have going to the quarterfinal matches are doing a good job."
Nate Gallick, defending 141-pound Midlands champion and number one seed, recorded three three-point near falls on his way to pinning Northern Iowa's Ryan Osgood at the 5:27 mark in the first round. Gallick registered a 22-5 technical fall over Cal-State Bakersfield's Jeremy Doyle as time expired, advancing Gallick to the quarterfinal match.
Fifth-ranked Kurt Backes also advanced to the quarterfinal match. Backes, seeded second, decisioned John Murphy of Michigan State, 6-5, in the opening round. He then notched a 13-5 major decision over Joseph Gulotta of Northwestern.
Travis Paulson, the number one seed at 165 pounds, opened with a 13-4 major decision over Mark Baria of Harvard. Paulson registered his third win of the season over Iowa's Cole Pape, a 7-1 decision. Paulson will be wrestling in tonight's quarterfinal match and is gunning for his first Midlands title.
Also advancing to quarterfinal action is senior 133-pounder Jesse Sundell. Sundell drew a bye in the first round, and followed that with a 12-3 major decision over West Liberty State's Matt Mossor.
Aron Scott (149) picked up his second pin of the season by putting Thomas Johnson of Eastern Illinois on his back at the 1:46 mark of the first period. Junior Grant Turner notched the third ISU pin of the session, a 2:54 stick of Purdue's Barry Jackson. Other Cyclones registering wins were Ben Hanisch (125), David Bertolino (174) and Derek Nelson (197).
In addition to ISU's four quarterfinalists, seven wrestlers remain alive the consolation bracket. Hanisch, Scott, Bertolino, Turner, Nelson, Joe Curran (197) and Richard Schopf (HWT) will attempt to make their way through wrestlebacks.
ISU's Trent Paulson is not competing in the tournament. Other notable wrestlers not competing are Indiana's top-ranked Joe Dubuque (125), Iowa's defending Midlands champion Paul Bradley (184) and Illinois' Kyle Ott (125).
Consolation and championship bracket competition will resume at Welsh-Ryan Arena at 7 p.m. Thursday evening.
