No. 8 Iowa State Travels to Arizona

The eighth-ranked Iowa State wrestlers (4-2, 0-0) will travel to Tempe, Ariz., on Jan. 8 to face UC Davis (2-1) and Arizona State (3-3) in the Sun Devil Duals. ISU downed ASU in their last meeting on Nov. 28, 2004, by a 22-16 margin. This weekend will mark the first meeting between the Cyclones and the Aggies.

Iowa State downed Virginia Tech on Thursday night, 32-11, in Hilton Coliseum. Cyclone wrestlers earned bonus team points at 197, 141, 149 and 165 pounds by recording two technical falls, one major decision and a pin. ISU held a 29-9 takedown advantage over the Hokies.

UC Davis last competed in the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 18, where three Aggies were crowned champions including No. 13 Frank Richmond (165), No. 15 Ken Cook (174) and No. 18 Tyler Bernacchi (184). UCD recorded three major decisions en route to defeating San Francisco State, 24-12, Dec. 9 in Davis, Calif. 

The 19th-ranked Sun Devil's are coming off a 23-19 loss to No. 2 Minnesota on Tuesday. ASU got wins from No. 8 Jeremy Mendoza (125), No. 9 Brian Stith (157), Alex Pavlenko (174), C.B. Dollaway (184) and No. 8 Ryan Bader (197). Unranked Alex Pavlenko upset No. 10 Gabreil Dretsch at 174-pounds.

ISU grapplers will return to the mats on Jan. 14-15 competing in the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals. Among the seven divisions, 80 teams will wrestle at the Duals, including 16 Division I schools. Wrestling action will return to Ames on Sunday., Feb. 5, at noon when Iowa State will play host to Penn State. The dual will take place at Ames High School due to a scheduling conflict in Hilton Coliseum.
