Hanisch (125) jumped out in front early with five first period points and was able to hold off Seth Wright of UNI and avenged an earlier 8-3 loss at the hands of Wright during the Midlands Tournament. Hanisch is a native of Waterloo and wrestled at Waterloo Columbus High School You knew that Hanisch would be ready to put up a good fight in front of many home town fans and that is just what he did.
#1 ranked Nate Gallick kept the momentum rolling in the Cyclones favor with a dominating 20-6 major decision over four-time Iowa High School State Champion C.J. Ettelson of UNI. Jason Knipp (149) and Trent Paulson (157) notched two of the Cyclone wins and David Bertolino (174) put together an impressive 11-1 major decision over Curt Zinnel.
Kurt Backes (184) put the meet away for the Cyclones with another defensive pin over Dan Dunning at the 3:29 mark. Backes took a 4-1 lead and found himself arching while exposing Dunning's back to the mat and got a quick pin called. Backes is familiar with this position from not only practice but also with a win over Ryan Halsey of Cal-Poly in a similar position.
Hopefully this meet will get Kurt Backes (13-5) and the Cyclones rolling after a tough 1-2 team showing at the National Duals last weekend. The road doesn't get any easier as Iowa State travels to eighth-ranked Oklahoma on Saturday and second-ranked Oklahoma State on Sunday.
