Cyclone Wrestlers Lose to Cowboys

After upsetting Oklahoma yesterday, the Iowa State wrestling team set its sights on No. 2 Oklahoma State today in Stillwater, OK. The Cyclones found themselves fighting from behind all day and only mustered three wins in a 26-14 defeat.

Nate Gallick protected his record (now 25-0) with a technical fall against Ethan Kyle.  Gallick dominated the match from the first whistle and finished with a 24-9 victory.  After finishing the weekend unscathed, Gallick will surely take the top spot at 141-pounds.

Junior Trent Paulson beat No. 13 Kevin Ward 5-3 at 157-pounds.  Ward, who defeated Paulson last year to claim the 157-pound Big 12 title, has continued to move up the rankings throughout the year.  Paulson proved his No. 3 ranking was no joke and Ward had no answer for Paulson's strength.

After seeing his junior campaign have more ups and downs that most roller coasters, Kurt Backes appears to have found his groove.  A day after defeating No. 13 Justin Dyer of Oklahoma, Backes earned a pin over Jack Jensen in just 1:33.

The Cyclones face Penn State at Ames High School next Sunday at noon.
