Iowa State rookie Nick Fanthorpe finished second this weekend at 125 pounds at the Missouri Valley Open in Marshall. The former fourth-team Amateur Wrestling News All-American posted three major decisions prior to reaching the finals and now has a 12-7 record this season. Fanthorpe finished third at the Harold Nichols Open in November.
Fanthorpe, a two-time Illinois state champion from Naperville, entered the tournament seeded sixth. He major decisioned Missouri Valley's Brandon Nice, 16-2, in his first match. Fanthorpe toppled Central Missouri State's Cory Bloodgood in his second-round bout before upsetting the No. 2 seed from Missouri Valley, Billy Exline, 13-3. In the finals, Fanthorpe faced Missouri's 2006 Roger Denker Open champion John Olanowski whom he decisioned at the Harold Nichols Open, 10-4, but fell to the Tiger in a close bout, 9-8.
Fellow freshman Jake Varner, a two-time California state champion and first-team AWN All-American, scored pins at 184 pounds over McKendree's Chaz Maloch at the 1:58 mark and Iowa's eighth-seeded Rick Loera in 5:28. Varner advanced to the third-round on a disqualification and injury defaulted in the semifinals.
