Whitney Perkins and Jessica Quade recorded two hits each but Iowa State was unable to overcome three errors as it fell to South Carolina, 3-0, in the season opener.

The Cyclones (0-1) threatened in the third, moving runners to first and third with one out, but were unable to convert them into runs. Perkins, a freshman from Marion, Iowa, got things started with a one out infield single and advanced to third when Fallon Johnson reached on an error. Johnson was then caught stealing and Gamecock pitcher Melanie Henkes forced Katie Reichling to ground out to end the inning.

A wild pitch by Alyssa Ransom in the bottom of the third gave the Gamecocks a 1-0 lead. Ransom avoided more trouble by getting the Gamecocks' cleanup hitter Ashley Smith to strikeout looking, stranding Jessica Josker at third.

South Carolina (6-2) would extend the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Lisa Longo that drove home Ashton Payne.

The Gamecocks added an insurance run in the sixth on an error by the Cyclones.

Ransom (0-1) went the distance for the Cyclones, allowing three runs on seven hits. The junior struck out five Carolina batters.

Henkes (2-0) allowed five hits but was able to keep the Cyclones off the scoreboard to pick up the win for the Gamecocks.

The Cyclones will continue play at the Seminole Classic with a 3 p.m. game this afternoon against Florida State.

Notes: Jessica Quade recorded the first hit of the season for Iowa State with her single to left field in the second inning … Whitney Perkins' third inning infield single was the first of her career … Perkins tallied two hits in her debut for the Cyclones.
