Quade and Ford Lead ISU Over South Carolina

Amie Ford tossed a shutout and Jessica Quade hit a one-out sixth inning single to give Iowa State a 1-0 win over South Carolina in Tallahassee, Fla. on Saturday.

Ford kept South Carolina (6-4) off balance throughout the game, mixing in a variety of pitches and retiring 14 of the last 16 batters, to give first-year head coach Stacy Gemeinhardt her first victory at Iowa State.

Ford got Ashton Payne to hit a ground ball to Cary Akins, who stepped on second and relayed it to Quade for a double play, ending a fifth inning Gamecock threat that saw a base runner at first and a 3-0 count on Payne.

The Cyclones (1-2) struck first on Jessica Quade's single to left field that scored pinch runner Ellen Buehner in the bottom of the sixth.

The rally started with back-to-back one-out doubles by Ashley Killeen and Katie Reichling. Quade then drove Jessica Barnes' pitch through the infield to plate Iowa State's first run of the season.

Jennifer Bigbee, Killeen and Reichling each had a pair of hits for Iowa State. Lisa Longo had two hits to pace the Gamecocks.

Ford (1-1), who tossed a complete game four-hitter, shut the door on the Gamecocks in the final frame.

Barnes (0-1) got the loss for Carolina, going 5.1 innings and allowing one run on six hits.

Iowa State will battle Florida State in the final game of the Seminole Classic at 3 p.m. this afternoon.

Notes: The win was the first of head coach Stacy Gemeinhardt's career at Iowa State … it was also Ford's first win in an Iowa State uniform … Ford lowered her ERA to 1.11 on the season … the shutout was Iowa State's first since April 24 last year when they shutout No. 3 Texas, 1-0.
