SB: Rally Leads ISU Past Texas State

A late rally, capped by two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, led Iowa State to a 4-3 victory over Texas State at the University of Houston's Cougar Softball Field on Sunday morning.

Beth Tharp led off the seventh with a single for the Cyclones (3-6). Whitney Perkins entered as a pinch runner and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cary Akins. Ellen Buehner's second single of the contest advanced Perkins to third, and Buehner advanced to second base on Texas State's throw to the plate.

With one out and two runners in scoring position, Fallon Johnson drew a walk to load the bases. Ashley Killeen followed with a walk to drive in the tying run.

Katie Reichling, already responsible for an ISU run earlier in the contest, lofted a fly ball that was bobbled by the center fielder. Buehner crossed the plate as the winning run, and the comeback was complete.

Texas State (10-8) used three hits and three errors to propel them to a three-run fourth inning and put them ahead 3-1.

A double-steal led to two runs for the Bobcats when ISU second baseman Jennifer Bigbee's throw home sailed just out of Killeen's reach, allowing a pair of Bobcats to score on the play.

ISU took a brief lead in the third when Killeen, after fighting of a number of two-strike pitches, bounced one to deep short for the apparent third out but Texas State first baseman Kristin Gunter was unable to handle the relay, allowing Akins to score and putting ISU on top 1-0.

Reichling cut into the lead with the first Iowa State home run of the season, a blast to dead center off of Texas State relief pitcher Sarah Lancour, making it 3-2 in favor of the Bobcats.

The Cyclones' Amie Ford (2-3) earned the victory, allowing just three runs on five hits. All three runs were unearned.

Iowa State will be off until Friday when they travel to Summerville, S.C. and play Central Connecticut State at 12 p.m.
