Three-run Third Inning Helps Drake Defeat ISU

Drake had five hits, all in the third inning, to score three runs and defeat Iowa State, 3-2, in softball action at Buel Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Iowa State (15-13) pitcher Amie Ford held the Bulldogs hitless until Jamie Desjarlais hit a one-out single to left field to start the Bulldog rally. After Desjarlais stole second, Shanna Cook singled to get the Drake (13-16) on the board and tie the game at 1-1. The Bulldogs added two more on run scoring singles by Emily Hadjuk and Marilyn Buss to go up 3-1.

Iowa State got single runs in the second and fifth innings but was unable to tie the game up despite a leadoff single by Jessica Quade in the seventh inning.

The Cyclones' first run came on a double by Jennifer Bigbee that plated Beth Tharp. Fallon Johnson extended her hitting streak to eight games with a RBI single that scored pinch runner Whitney Perkins in the fifth inning.

That would be all the closer the Cyclones would get as Jessica Hicks kept ISU off the board in the final two frames to pick up her first save of the season. Cassie Heller (4-7) got the win after holding the Cyclones to two runs on five hits.

Ford (9-6) got the loss for Iowa State despite holding Drake hitless in every inning but the third.

Bigbee went 1-for-2 and has now recorded a double in three of the last four games for Iowa State.

The Cyclones will host No. 1 Texas in their home opener on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
