One on One With Tyrone McKenzie

CN interviews Tyrone McKenzie.

Williams: Can you talk a little bit about this spring so far? How are you adjusting to playing at Iowa State?

McKenzie: I'm loving Iowa State right now. I'm getting the chance to play for a great coach like Coach Skladany. It's a great honor. Last year standing on the sidelines not being eligible to play, watching those guys out there and Coach Skladany coaching them up, it was just biting me at the bits to get out there and play. He moved me to SAM Backer. I'm grasping onto the plays and everything. I'm enjoying it. I'm ready for the fall.

Williams: What's it feel like finally getting to go out there and hit some people after taking a year off?

McKenzie: Oh it feels great. I love hitting. I love to play. Now I get a chance to play.

Williams: When I look at the crew that you guys have at linebacker, I see one of the most athletic groups ever at Iowa State. Talk a little bit about what it's like playing with those guys.

McKenzie: It's great. Me, Carper, Bowen, and Robertson. That's one of the best in the Big 12 right there. If we keep working in our plays and get everything down, we can be one of the best in the nation. That's our goal right now. We're athletic. We all love to hit and we all make plays. That's what you need. A bunch of playmakers and that's what we've got here.

Williams: Do you feel a little bit of extra pressure with the youth of the defensive line in front of you?

McKenzie: I always try and put pressure on myself to play better. The D-line's going to be good. We've got some good players, everybody has got to learn. I've got to learn my new position too. Everybody has got to learn their stuff. After we get our stuff down, there will be less pressure on everybody. Everybody will just go out there and play and everybody will be accountable for themselves.

Williams: What do you think about Coach Sims early on?

McKenzie: He's a nice guy. He's a good coach. He breaks it down. He makes you understand. If you don't understand it he's going to make sure that you understand it. I like him a lot.

Williams: Looking ahead to the fall. What are your personal goals along with your goals for the team?

McKenzie: Right now my personal goal is to go out there and be accountable for my teammates. I want to go out there and play to my full potential. I want to help my team get to that mountain that we want to get to as a team. We want to be one of the best in the Big 12. Our team goal right now is to come together as one so when the fall comes around everything is snapping and we can go ahead and run through the Big 12 and get that championship for the first time in a while.
