Iowa State pounded out 10 hits and Alyssa Ransom and Amie Ford combined for a four-hitter to lead the Cyclones past South Dakota State, 10-1, in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at Southwest Athletic Complex on Tuesday.
Steph Kuhl's first inning single scored Tessie Winterton and put the Jackrabbits on top 1-0.
The lead wouldn't last long as
Fallon Johnson reached on an infield single and advanced to third on a bunt single by Kristy Olsen. Johnson beat a throw home on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 1-1.
After Katie Reichling walked to
load the bases, Jennifer Bigbee was hit by a pitch to score Olsen. SDSU pitcher
Kiley Schwedhelm got Jessica Quade to pop out before pinch runner Whitney
Perkins scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Stephanie Mosley, putting
ISU added solo runs in the second and third innings to increase the lead to 6-1.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Mosley roped a double to right center to plate Bigbee and make it 7-1.
The game ended in the sixth when ISU scored three runs to invoke the run rule.
Johnson led off the inning with an
infield single and scored on a
Ransom (11-12) got the win after tossing four innings and allowing just one unearned run on two hits. Ford struck out three and allowed just two hits in two innings of relief.
Schwedhelm (0-2) got the loss after allowing six runs on five hits.
12-run First Inning Leads
With the win,
Reichling belted a grand slam in the first inning and a two-run homer in third to post a career-high six RBI in the win.
The big first inning started with a
leadoff single by Fallon Johnson. Kristy Olsen then bunted to reach base and
Ashley Killeen walked to load the bases. Reichling then stepped to the plate and
hit a towering shot off the scoreboard in right centerfield to put
The Cyclones again loaded the bases with three straight singles by Jessica Quade, Jennifer Bigbee and Stephanie Mosley. Pinch runner Ellen Buehner came across on an infield hit by Cary Akins and Bigbee scored on a bases loaded walk to Lindsey Black, making it 6-0 with no outs.
The offensive explosion didn't end
there as Johnson picked up her second hit of the inning to score Mosley. Black
and Akins came across on an error by the Jackrabbits and
Reichling singled in a run for her fifth RBI of the inning and Mosley added another run scoring single to make it 12-0 after one inning of play.
That was plenty of scoring for starter Amie Ford, who tossed two innings of one-hit ball before being replaced by Reichling for the final three innings.
The Cyclones added another run on a
double by Johnson in the second inning and Reichling ripped her second homer, a
solo shot to right field, in the third inning to complete the scoring for
Reichling and Johnson each went 3-for-4 with Reichling driving in six RBI and Johnson driving in a pair of runs in the win. Reichling (1-0) also got her first win of the year after allowing just one hit in relief.
Mosley, Olsen and Quade each recorded a pair of hits and Heidi Hageman got her first career hit, a single through the left side in the fourth.
