Vander Sanden's Top 5...Upsets

This week, I focus on my efforts on my top five upsets of all-time in Iowa State Football history. This list I generated was helped out by Iowa State's media guide. I am hoping that Cyclone fans, young and old, can re-live some of the games that I have listed. Feel free to comment and share your memories on these upset games that made my top five. Sit back, enjoy, and turn the time wheel with me.

1973, hosted #14 Missouri… ISU 17, Missouri 7…

This game looked as if it was a defensive battle.  Missouri gained 112 rushing yards to ISU's 223. ISU broke a four game losing streak with the win over Missouri.  ISU went on to go 4-7 that season.

1976 @ #7 Missouri… ISU 27, Missouri 17…

ISU put more than 300 yards on the ground rushing against Missouri in 1976.  Both offenses appeared to be strong and loaded.  The two teams together put up more than 900 yards of total offense.  ISU finished the 1976 campaign with a record of 8-3.

1977 @ #9 Nebraska…ISU24, NEB 21…

ISU put up over 275 yards rushing on the Huskers in 1997, and held the Huskers to a little shy of 310 total yards offensively.  ISU went on to the Peach Bowl in 1977, and lost to North Carolina State, 24-14.  They posted a season record of 8-4.

1981, hosted #8 Missouri…ISU 34, Missouri 13…

John Quinn was 20-32, with 226 yards through the air to lead the charge for the hungry Cyclones.  This team also held Missouri to under 275 yards of total offense.  This Cyclone Football team in 1981 finished the season 5-5-1.

1998 @ IOWA…ISU 27, Iowa 7…

ISU ended the 15 game skid against Iowa, and were led by Darren Davis' rushing performance.  The Cyclones scored pay dirt three times with the ground game.  This game re-started a competitive series with Iowa again, which was well-needed in the state.  The 1998 ISU Football team went on to finish the season 3-8 under Coach McCarney.

This concludes my top five this week.  I am sure it is open for much controversy, but I thought it would be fun to look back at some of the big games from the past.  These games stretch from the Earl Bruce Era, the Donnie Duncan era, and the Coach McCarney era.  Sure, I don't remember any of the games in the 1980's and 1970's.  I can guarantee that those wins were big time wins for the respective coaches at the time.  I am hoping that some fans can chirp in and share some of their memories from those games.
