Notebook: McDermott Returns to Cedar Falls

It has been a busy day for Iowa State athletics today as everyone is anticipating Texas defensive coordinator Gene Chizik to be named the new Iowa State head coach tonight at 6 p.m. On top of that, Iowa State basketball coach Greg McDermott met with the media today to talk about his return to UNI on Wednesday. Get notes on what McDermott had to say right here.

-         McDermott said that UNI would be Iowa State's biggest test so far. He even went as far to say that UNI's front court might be the toughest Iowa State will see all season long.

-         McDermott said that the guys are fired up and the offense has been improving.

-         McDermott talked about how close he is with the UNI coaches, especially Head Coach Jacobson who he called his "best friend." He said that even though they are close, they are still competitive. "Neither of us like to lose much," McDermott said.

-         McDermott said that he doesn't want to overload the Iowa State post players on how to play the UNI front court. He admitted that he obviously knows their strengths and weaknesses but he wants to keep it as simple as possible for his players.

-         McDermott said that he expects UNI to get the ball inside.

-         In regarding his reception at the UNI Dome on Wednesday, McDermott said "I really have no idea (how he will be treated)." The coach mentioned that he started the UNI student section a few years ago with a few people, and now it's grown to thousands. "We encouraged them to be creative and respectful. I'm sure they'll be creative but I'm not sure how respectful."

-         McDermott said that he takes a lot of pride as a former coach and player that UNI's new arena is up and running.

-         McDermott said that UNI at one time was his dream job, but the Iowa State job was too good of an opportunity for him and his family to pass up. He then said that if it's not him coaching at UNI, he'd want it to be Jacobson.

-         McDermott said that he doesn't expect Jiri Hubalek to start on Wednesday, but he will play a lot.
