IOWA CITY, IowaIowa State's fourth-rated wrestlers were in every match. But Iowa won most of the close matches and beat Iowa State, 24-6 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. ISU was looking to defeat Iowa for a second time in three years, but was only able to boast two individual winners, Cyler Sanderson at 149-pounds and Jake Varner at 184-pounds. Less than two points decided seven matches. Iowa State falls to 2-1 in dual action, while Iowa improves to 3-0.

"Overall there are a lot of things we can take from this," Iowa State head coach Cael Sanderson said. "In most of the matches we were actually the ones forcing the action and not taking timeouts. All 10 matches really could have gone either way. This meet gives our guys the feel of NCAA matches, which often go to the wire."

Sanderson defeated Alex Grunder 9-8. Gunder took Sanderson down in the opening 10 seconds, but was able to recover by scoring a reversal to tie the score 2-2. After an escape by Grunder, Sanderson scored a takedown to go up 4-3. By the end of the opening period, Sanderson held a one-point, 6-5 advantage. Grunder began the final period from the down position and was able to escape taking a one-point lead. With 28 seconds remaining in the match, Sanderson took Grunder down and sealed the victory. The Heber City, Utah, native remains unbeaten in dual action at 3-0 as he improves his season record to 11-2.

"It was great. I really tried to be the one to dictate the tempo," Cyler Sanderson said. "Overall obviously the team could have done better, but I really enjoyed wrestling in this atmosphere."

Jake Varner remains undefeated (10-0) at 184-pounds as he downed Phillip Keddy. With 43 seconds left in the match, Varner sealed the win as he took down Keddy to take a 5-2 lead. Varner tacked on 1:46 worth of riding time for another point.

Iowa State wrestling will return to action in Hilton Coliseum Friday at 8 p.m. as it will play host to top-ranked Minnesota.
