Bret Meyer Q&A

If you missed the audio of our last chat with ISU's two-time captain and record-setting quarterback, here's the transcript.

Q: How is practice going?

Meyer: It's going good. You've got to understand that one-a-days and two-a-days …you kind of get your days planned out how they're going to be.

Q: The coaches have kind of indicated they'll be a mimic of Florida where you'll be the star, but they'll work in Austin. What do you think of that?

Meyer: That's fine. Austin is obviously a little bit bigger guy so if they're going to get him in there, that's fine. Whatever we can do to keep defenses on it's toys, we'll do it. With the experience I have, they know how to take care of things like that.

Q: Do you ever think of rhythm?

Meyer: I've never had to do it so I don't know. I don't really think about it too much. I think I'll be fine with it.

Q: You talked about going into schrimmaging tomorrow and what you're expecting to see.

Meyer: It'll be our second schrimmage so we kind of know how it goes. The last schrimmage we had too many turnovers.

Q: Is there a receiver that you can tell us is standing out? Is there someone who, at least with your workouts, seems to be distinguishing themselves right now.

Meyer: A lot of guys are. Obviously, Euseph is out there and is getting a lot of playing time.

Q: Yesterday, talking to Coach Rainy, he said that trying to defend this offense they don't know if they saw the same play twice. Talk about what it's like running this offense and how much variety is in it and how you feel about ti.

Meyer: I feel good about it. We've had a lot of formations and we run a lot of plays and I think that's just good as an offense that everyone can pick it up as well as they have. We have a lot of options that we can use and I think we'll give the defense a lot of problems with it.

Q: As we go through the season, and everyone's talking about the rebuilding mode and what can they expect. You're a senior. What would be a successful season for you?

Meyer: Right now, I'm trying to get better every day. That's what they said Day 1 of the camp and that's what we're going to focus on. The next thing I have to do is get ready for a meeting at eight o'clock. That's the next thing I have to get ready for. I'm not going to look too far ahead.

Q: This team…the offense…talk about how you're utilizing those two positions this year.

Meyer: We're just letting them get out on the edge and maybe just have one guy to beat and make plays on it. We've got some good tight ends and we're going to get them the ball too and some space because that's something that's normally very underutilized. But, we want to make sure that we give them the chances to make plays.

Q: Running the ball has been a priority of Coach Chizik and Coach McFarland, talk about the battle that's going on in that position. We've heard some good things about Jason and JJ and even Cameron. Talk about what that battle's like right now.

Meyer: All four guys are doing a great job…Alexander Robinson's been doing good, Scales, and even Jason Harris. They're all competing, switching around, and doing everything. They've all done well.

Q: We've heard JJ's got some speed. How does he look out there in pads?

Meyer: He looks good. You can tell that he's someone if you give him some space, he'll definitely make plays for us.

Q: Now, obviously receivers are the strength of this team. Could we see sometimes or have you guys lined up that we're seeing three or even four receivers are the field at a time.

Meyer: Yeah, we've got lots of sets and we're going to have multiple receivers on the field....a lot of variety.

Q: How excited is Todd about the possibility that he won't see the same kind of double-teaming this year that he's seen in the past?

Meyer: I'm sure he'll be excited about it. Any good receiver would. I think if he chops some teams up early for a lot of yards, he'll see it again and that's when the team has to step up.
