Florida DT Looking At Iowa State

Ft.Walton Beach (FL) High School's Akeem SPence is already developing a solid relationship with some of the Iowa State assistant coaches.

"They're pretty cool. I have a lot of fun with Coach Bolt," he said. "We crack jokes when we talk and he really makes me laugh."

The 6-foot-1, 280-pound defensive tackle has scholarship offers from Illinois, N.C. State, Iowa State, USF, E.Carolina, FIU, Troy, FAU, Tulane, Northern Illinois, Arkansas State, and East Carolina.

He says that he is wide open but that the Cyclones are definitely a school that is highly involved with him. "Coach Bolt and Coach Pelton have both been down to see me," said Spence. "They have seen me practice and they have seen my spring game. I talk to them every couple of weeks."

Akeem feels he has one major role as a defensive tackle but that he can be flexible when needed. "I'm mainly a run-stuffer," he said. "Every once in a while they move me to defensive end on third down to do some pass rushing but my main job is to stop the run."

In order to improve his pass rush ability, Spence has been working on his speed. "I"ve been at school working out all summer," he said. "I'm trying to get my 40 time down to a 4.7 from a 4.8 where it's at right now."

While Akeem has never been to Iowa State, he has gained some knowledge about the school from an incoming Cyclone recruit. "I know (defensive back) Dustin Land because I've been playing against him for a while down here," said Spence. "I talked to him about Iowa State and he told me to take a visit and that he really likes the school."

Akeem said that he will not be making a decision any time soon. "I won't be making my choice until after the football season because I plan on taking all my visits."
