JUCO Star Visiting Iowa State This Weekend

Due to a scheduling conflict, one of Iowa State's major recruiting targets will not be able to attend the Cyclones home opener against South Dakota State. However, due to Iowa State's strong interest he will be arriving in Ames on Friday for an official visit.

"We have a scrimmage on Thursday which is the same day as their game," said Reedley Junior College quarterback Darius Reynolds. "So I'm coming out Friday morning and I'll be there until Sunday."

The 6-foot-4, 190-pound quarterback was highly recruited coming out of Hylton High School in Lake Ridge, Virginia but when he didn't get a high enough score on his ACT he headed to Reedley Junior College in California. "It really helped me mature on the field last year," said Reynolds. "I had to step up as a leader and I feel it was my best year in football that I have ever had. It's definitely been a good experience for me."

One of Iowa State's new assistant coaches is the primary reason why the Cyclones are recruiting Reynolds so hard. "They are my only offer at the moment," he said. "Coach (Shane) Beatty was with me last year here at Reedley and I know if I ended up at Iowa State that he would take care of me."

Due to the fact that Iowa State has been recruiting Darius as a wide receiver, he has also been talking a lot with another Cyclone assistant coach. "I probably talk with (wide receivers) coach (Jay) Rodgers the most. I just talked with him yesterday," said Reynolds. "He seems real cool as a coach. He's just told me that I would fit in at Iowa State and I think we could get along real well there."

Reynolds said he is okay with making the switch to wide receiver but would also like a chance at quarterback. "Right now Iowa State is recruiting me as a wide receiver but they said they would give me a chance to compete at quarterback," he said. "But I also think it would be good to play wide receiver. When I come in I would just need some time to improve my route running and knowledge at receiver but I think I could be very successful at the position."

Darius says that playing wide receiver is not completely a foreign concept to him. "I played it in high school as a sophomore and a little bit last season," he said. "Even though I started at quarterback, Coach White had a few screen plays designed for me when they would split me out at wide receiver. It was a nice change of pace."

Reynolds has also gotten to speak a few times with Iowa State Head Coach Gene Chizik. "I got to talk with him a couple of times and he seems like a real cool guy," he said. "He told me that he watched my film and that he really wants me to come for a visit and that they could really use me next year."

One thing Reynolds did make clear is that he won't be making a final decision in the near future. "I just want to see what the environment is like there and see how the players and coaches are during the weekend," he said. "I'm likely going to wait until after the season to make my decision."
