Heralded Safety Commits to Cyclones

Iowa State head coach Dan McCarney got some great news while visiting the state of Florida Wednesday morning, as he secured his team's 19th commitment for the Class of 2003.

Delray Beach (Fla.) Atlantic strong safety Brandon Owens, who is ranked number one nationally by The Insiders, committed to the Cyclones alongside his friend and teammate Steve Allen Wednesday morning. The two took visits together last weekend, and Owens has decided to spurn scholarship offers from the likes of Florida, Georgia, Kansas State and several others to join Allen in Ames.

"He is so fluid back there at safety," said Atlantic Assistant Head Coach Jim Maloney yesterday in an interview with The Insiders' Jamie Newberg. "Brandon can do it all and he can run you over like a truck. He returns interceptions for touchdowns and makes big play after big play. I would say that he is one of the few kids that could play for anyone in America as a true freshman. I mean anyone."

We'll have more on Owens, with more comments from Maloney on today's commitment, in the next hour.
