Meet Mike Gesell

Iowa State already has one outstanding player committed for their 2012 recruiting class and they would like to add one of his best friends to the class.

"We are all good friends," said Gesell of Cyclone 2012 commit Wesley Staten. "Getting to play against him was a lot of fun. It will be a friendly rivalry for the next four years."

The 5-foot-11, 165-pound guard and his South Sioux City (NE) High School teammates defeated Staten and his Sioux City West (IA) High School teammates early this season and while they are close friends, Mike is not ready to make any kind of early commitment like his former AAU teammate. "I don't think I'll make my final decision until the end of my sophomore or junior season," said Gesell. "Wes and I good friends and I like Iowa State a lot but I won't base my college choice on who is going there. I'm really happy for Wes that he committed early but I'm not ready to commit yet."

Mike currently has scholarship offers from Nebraska, Northern Iowa, Creighton, and Iowa State and says that he's just trying to keep things in perspective and enjoy his freshman season. "It's been pretty amazing and I just try not to think about the recruiting too much," said Gesell. "I'm just trying to be humble and let my basketball do the talking and keep up with my school work."

Mike has already stepped up as a freshman leading his team in scoring for seven of their ten games. He is also averaging 16 points per game while leading his team to a 7-3 record so far. "Playing AAU is a lot like playing up on varsity so all my experience in AAU was great preparation for what I'm doing now," he said. "The toughest part is that we usually only play about one game a week. In AAU ball, we might play five games in a weekend so if you had a bad game you just could play better in the next game. With playing varsity you really have to come out every game ready to go."

Iowa State has been recruiting Gesell since this last summer and he says that he really likes the Cyclones coaching staff. "Coach Rutter has been here a lot and he's really a nice guy," said Gesell. "I really kind of like the atmosphere of their coaching staff a lot."

Gesell also has enjoyed meeting Iowa State head coach Greg McDermott. "I got to talk to him some this summer and that went well," he said. "He watched me play AAU and he liked how we played."

Mike also says that if his schedule works out that he would like to make it to Hilton Coliseum this year for one the Iowa State home games. "If things can work out I'm maybe going to see one," said Gesell. "I've heard good things but I've never been to one."
