Where Do The Defensive Recruits Fit?

New Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads is known for his ability to coach defense. So which of our new recruits will Rhoads be looking at to possibly make an impact in 2009?

Defensive End:

Seniors Rashawn Parker and Chris Lyle are the only players at this position with a lot of experience at this level. Junior college newcomer Taylor Martin will be expected to compete for playing time right from the start. Redshirt freshman Jake McDonough is a player that some believe could have a major impact in 2009. Other redshirt freshmen Cleyon Laing and Roosevelt Maggitt will need to add depth at the position. Newcomer Aaron Moore has the size for the position (6-foot-5, 255-pounds) but not too much is known on how good he could be at the position. The other newcomer at this position is converted linebacker Willie Scott. I'm guessing that both Moore and Scott end up redshirting next season.

Defensive Tackle:

The staff added only one player at this position but really wanted to add at least one or two more to this class. Nate Frere will return as the only senior and compete with juniors Bailey Johnson and Austin Alburtis and sophomores Jerrod Black and Stephen Ruempolhamer. Due to this depth, I feel that newcomer Walter Woods will likely redshirt next season.

Seniors Fred Garrin and Jesse Smith will very likely be starting at two of the three spots which should lead to seniors Josh Raven and Derec Schmidgall and junior Cameron Bell competing for the other spot. If these guys don't step up during the season don't be surprised to see redshirt freshman Kevin Hamlin or newcomers A.J. Klein and Princeton Jackson taking some of their minutes later in the season. Freshman Jake Knott will likely redshirt.

Sophomore Leonard Johnson will most likely start at one corner spot. The other starting spot and nickel back positions will likely go to seniors Kennard Banks and Allen Bell, junior Devin McDowell, or sophomore Ter'ran Benton. Redshirt freshman Judah Linder could jump in the mix but I'm guessing that freshmen Jacques Washington and Jeremy Reeves end up redshirting next season.

Senior James Smith and juniors Zac Sandvig and Michael O'Connell are the only players with a lot of experience at this position. Due to this fact, junior college newcomer David Sims has a very good chance at winning one of the starting spots. Redshirt freshman Dustin Land might jump into the mix but I doubt newcomers Deon Broomfield, Brandon Mims, or Jansen Watson will have a big impact on next season. There is a good chance that two or all three of them end up redshirting.
