Earls Enjoys ISU Spring Game

North Dakota State College of Science linebacker Derek Earls had never been on an unofficial college visit until he arrived in Ames this past Saturday for the Iowa State spring game.

"Overall it was a really good time," said Earls. "I didn't have anything to compare it to but from what I saw I was really impressed."

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound linebacker has offers from Iowa State and Colorado and is also being recruited heavily by Arizona. Although he was only on campus for part of one day, Derek feels he got to see a lot of Iowa State. "They showed us the academic center and all the facilities and everything I saw was really nice," said Earls. "I was there with my dad and some of the other recruits and it was just really a good atmosphere."

Derek also enjoyed the spring game but feels getting to see a game in the fall might be even better. "The game was nice but it's only a spring game with them playing each other," he said. "It might be tough to get up here with my own schedule but it would be great to be here to see what a game day is like during the season."

Earls also enjoyed getting to talk with the coaching staff during his visit. "When I first got there I got to talk with Coach Belsher and Coach Burnham and we had a nice talk," he said. "Then I got to talk with Coach Rhoads and he's just really friendly. He always seems upbeat and wanting to move the program forward. I think he'll get it done."

Derek knows of one more likely visit that he will be taking but isn't sure about when he'll make his final decision. "I'm pretty sure I'll be taking a visit to Arizona at some point," he said. "But I'm not sure about when I'll make my decision. It will likely be in the fall at some point."
