CSR Talks With Mike Gesell

Cyclones Sports Report caught up with South Sioux City (NE) High School's Mike Gesell, who already has a scholarship offer from Iowa State, to see how his spring season is going.

Cyclone Sports Report: So how is your AAU season going playing for the Martin Brothers 15U team?

Mike Gesell: It's been really cool so far. The travel is great and I feel really fortunate to be able to go all the places we go. We lost in the semifinals a few weeks ago in Ft.Wayne and then next up for us is a tournament in Manhattan, Kansas and then we go the Rumble in the Bronx.

CSR: What did you learn most about high school basketball this past season?

MG: You really have to take it one game at a time. We beat a team twice during the season and then we didn't get to go to state because we lost to them when we played them the third time.

CSR: What schools do you have offers from?

MG: Creighton, UNI, Iowa State, and Nebraska. Wisconsin and Iowa are also recruiting me.

CSR: Which Iowa State coach are you talking to the most?

MG: I talk to Coach Rutter mostly and I have also talked some with Coach McDermott. I have a really good relationship with Coach Rutter and I think he is a really nice guy. He's watched a couple of my open gyms and he also went to some of my high school games this past season.

CSR: Are you going to any camps during the summer?

MG: Yeah, I'll be going to the Iowa State Elite Camp and the Nebraska Elite Camp in early June.

CSR: What are your thoughts about possibly playing with your friends Wesley Staten and Marcus Paige in college?

MG: We've talked about it and we are constantly joking around with it but I probably wouldn't pick a school just because they were going there. However, it would be fun to play with them in college.

CSR: What do you feel you have improved on the most over the past season?

MG: My basketball IQ and court sense are a lot better and I think I'm a better shooter.

CSR: What do you still need to work the most to improve your game?

MG: Finishing in the lane and my mid-range game.

CSR: Do you have a time frame for making your decision on a school?

MG: I'm not sure exactly but I know that there will not be a decision until at least after my sophomore or junior season is complete.
