Iowa State Lands A Punter

Due to impressive showing in Ames this week, West Des Moines (IA) Valley High School's Kirby Van Der Kamp landed an Iowa State scholarship offer. On Sunday afternoon he was in town again and decided to end his recruitment by committing to become a Cyclone.

Cyclone Sports Report: When did Iowa State start recruiting you?

Kirby Van Der Kamp: It started with the Jamie Kohl camp up in Ames this winter and then they also charted me at another Jamie Kohl camp in Wisconsin.

CSR: When did you get your offer?

KV: I went up to their special teams camp this Wednesday and put up good numbers. Coach Rhoads runs special teams so he was there the whole time and after the camp he came up to me and offered me a scholarship.

CSR: So what led to your decision today?

KV: I had been a little surprised to get an offer when I did so I wanted to talk it over a little with my parents before I made my final decision. It was pretty easy because Iowa State is the school that I wanted to go to. It's got a great engineering program which is what I want to major in and it's only 45 minutes away. Since I had a 7-on-7 tournament in Ames today I thought it would be better to do it in person.

CSR: How did Coach Rhoads take the news?

KV: He was very excited. He told me that it made his Father's Day.

CSR: What was your punting average last year?

KV: I didn't even punt last year because we had a senior who was really good. I played wide receiver but my coach new that I have been kicking the ball my whole life and so he helped me get my name out there so that my recruitment at the punter position could begin before I punt during my senior year.
