Kohler Enjoying His Busy Summer

Ames High School's James Kohler just finished what will likely be his last unofficial visit of the summer this weekend. Cyclone Sports Report caught up with him to see where his recruitment currently stands at the moment.

"If I had to choose a top four it would likely be Iowa State, Stanford, Northwestern, and Kansas but that could possibly change in the future," he said. "If something pops up in the fall I would look into it and possibly take some more visits."

Along with his top four James has also received scholarship offers from Missouri, Kansas State, and Iowa.

The 6-foot-7, 240-pound offensive tackle has kept a very busy schedule this summer as he approaches his senior year. "I've been to Northwestern, Stanford, and this past weekend I was at Kansas," said Kohler. "Along with that I'm pretty much just hitting the weights about three to four days a week along with my baseball schedule which has been very busy. We start the state playoffs this week and then we'll be done."

James met with Iowa State coaches soon after the new staff was in place and he says that they have done a good job of staying in contact throughout the summer so far. "Coach Ash is my recruiting coach for Iowa State and we talk a lot on the phone," he said. "I've also talked with Coach Rhoads a couple times recently and I have definitely enjoyed the time that I have spent with him. He definitely wants me at Iowa State and has told me how important it is to keep the top in-state talent at home in Iowa."

While James has looked at a handful of schools outside the state he does admit that Iowa State's location could play a factor in his decision. "I'd like to think that it won't but it could potentially," he said. "The fact that Ames is my hometown and that I grew up here is something could factor in the decision but I'm just not sure yet."

James does know the two most important things that will factor in his decision. "The coaches and how the football program is will be important along with the school's weight training program," said Kohler. "The other factor that is just important to me will be the academics. I'm looking at studying something with math or science so they will have to have programs that are strong in those areas."

James is not sure exactly when he will make his final decision but it won't likely be coming during the summer. "My parents and I need to sit down and make a pros and cons list for all the schools that I'm looking at," he said. "Then I could make it early in the fall or I might wait until during my football season before I decide."
