Meet Tom Farniok

Iowa State is looking to add offensive line depth to its 2009 recruiting class and one player they are targeting is Sioux Falls (SD) Washington High School center Tom Farniok.

"I went down in late July for the Friday Night Lights at Iowa State and I really liked it," said Farniok. "The old staff had my junior tape and when the new staff saw my tape they decided to invite me down. I talked a lot with Coach Bleil while I was there and then he called me three days later and put Coach Rhoads on the phone. He told me that they were offering me a scholarship."

The 6-foot-3, 260-pound center who also has offers from South Dakota, North Dakota State, and North Dakota really feels that he might fit in perfectly with what the new Iowa State offense runs. "Coach Rhoads told me that he liked me because I'm fast and strong and he said that's what they want in a center for their spread offense," said Farniok.

"He also told me that I was a hard worker and that I could come in and compete. We run a spread offense that uses the shot-gun at my high school so it could be an easy adjustment for me."

Farniok added that the type of offense that Iowa State runs could end up being a huge factor. "I didn't think it would a deciding factor until I saw what some other schools were doing but it could end up being a huge factor," he said. "I just feel real comfortable with the spread offense."

Tom also has really enjoyed getting to know the guy who would be his position coach if he chose Iowa State. "I really like Coach Bleil," said Farniok. "It was great working with him at the Friday Night Lights visit and we pretty much talk about once a week."

While Iowa State is Farniok's only major offer at the moment, he is hearing from numerous other schools. "I'll be at Minnesota this weekend for an unofficial visit and I'm also hearing from Iowa, Nebraska, Boise State, and Navy," he said.

"I'm working on setting up an official visit to Iowa State. I really like them and feel Coach Rhoads will definitely get them going in the right direction. Once my visits are done I'll make my decision my probably the fourth or fifth week of my season. I want to know where I'm going and I'm definitely not going to wait until the last minute to make my decision."
