ISU Looking To Add Another Gainesville Star

Will Gainesville (FL) High School star Devont'a Davis follow in the footsteps of new Cyclone starting safety David Sims?

"He graduated from Gainesville a few years back and he was a real big star down here," said Davis. "I got to know him a little bit and even though I haven't gotten to talk with him about Iowa State I definitely plan on doing so in the future."

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound cornerback lists his top five schools as Miami (Fla.), Arkansas, South Carolina, Iowa State, and Central Florida. He also has offers from Rutgers, Ole Miss, and FIU.

Devont'a says that Iowa State began looking at back during the spring. "Coach (Wally) Burnham came down during the spring and watched me practice," said Davis. "He told me that he liked my speed, size, and my ability to play the ball. They then offered me a scholarship soon after that. He and I just talked a couple days ago and we have pretty much been talking about once every two weeks."

Davis recently got off to a great start to his own season by helping Gainesville defeat Trinity Catholic 35-17 this past weekend. "I had eight tackles and five pass break-ups," he said.

He's not sure exactly when he'll make his final decision but he does know the main criteria for what he is looking for in a school. "I want to take my visits before I make my final decision and that means that I'll likely make a decision at some point during my season," said Davis.

"The first thing I'm looking for in a school is a place that I can go and graduate. The next thing would be playing time and lastly I want to find a place where they treat me like family when I'm away from my family."
