Johnson Has Many Options

After an early commitment to Northwestern, Deland (FL) High School's Shontrelle Johnson decided to open things up again and he'll be definitely taking more visits before he makes his final decision.

"Right now I'm still looking at Northwestern along with Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Kentucky, Memphis, Vanderbilt, USF, and I'm also starting to hear from Clemson," said Johnson. "I'm just looking for the right environment and to bond with the coaches."

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound running back has already took a visit to Iowa State in November and came away very impressed. "I really liked it and the Iowa State community could be a good fit," said Johnson. "I met some of the other Florida guys and it was a really good time. Their fan support was outstanding at the game."

Shontrelle has been recruited mostly by Iowa State assistant coach Courtney Messingham and says the two hit it off right away. "I feel we have a pretty good bond and I've learned a lot from our talks," he said. "He tells me that he likes how I make guys miss and he says that the Iowa State staff really likes my big play ability."

Johnson also enjoyed getting to know Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads. "We had a pretty good meeting and we really seemed to see eye to eye on all the stuff that we talked about," he said. "I really like the way he runs his program at Iowa State."

Shontrelle will be taking some more visits in January but he's not sure when he'll make his final decision. "I'm looking forward to taking some more visits but I don't know yet whether I'm going to wait until signing day or whether I'll make it earlier," said Johnson. "When I'm completely comfortable with a school and I feel the time is right I'll make my commitment final and end my recruitment."
