CSR Looks Ahead To 2010: Defensive Tackle

Cyclone Sports Report takes an early look at who will likely be anchoring the middle of the Iowa State defensive line in 2010.

The Iowa State defensive line will no longer have the services of Nate Frere in 2010 but they do return a variety of experienced players. "Austin Alburtis, Bailey Johnson, Stephen Ruempolhamer, and Jerrod Black are the highest on the depth chart at the moment," said Iowa State defensive coordinator Wally Burnham. "But we're also going to be taking a look at some of the younger guys."

One of those younger guys will still be rehabilitating his knee injury during the spring. "I'm real excited about Walter Woods but he'll likely still be missing parts of the spring because of his knee injury that he suffered during the season," said Burnham. "He'll likely sit out our 11-on-11 scrimmages but he probably be able to go through a lot of our drills. We think he's got a chance to be a real solid player for us."

One other player that will be trying to break into the rotation is redshirt freshman Jake McDonough. "Jake has a lot of ability to make plays," said Burnham. "But he has be a lot more consistent and that is something that he is going to have to work on in the spring."

The Iowa State defensive coordinator also mentioned that one defensive end could be moving over to become more of a versatile player. "I think we're also going to get Cleyon Laing some reps at defensive tackle during the spring," said Burnham. "He's still got a ways to go as we're trying to work with him to improve his burst to getting to the ball."
