CSR Looks Ahead To 2010: Linebackers

Cyclone Sports Report takes an early look at who will be challenging to start at linebacker in 2010.

Iowa State will have a major transition at the linebacker position heading into the 2010 season. The Cyclone defensive staff will be losing Fred Garrin, Josh Raven, Derec Schmidgall, and Jesse Smith.

According to Iowa State defensive coordinator Wally Burnham the linebacker position should be very young in 2010. "Senior Matt Taufoou will likely be the only senior in the mix," said Burnham. "The rest of the guys that are competing for starting spots at this moment will be (sophomores) A.J. Klein and Jake Knott. Obviously the incoming freshmen will get a chance to compete for playing time."

The Cyclone staff has recruited three outstanding linebacker prospects in Jeremiah George, Cqulin Hubert, and Floyd Mattison that all could see playing time in their first season at Iowa State.

Other linebackers that will compete for time are Kevin Hamlin, Preston Kaufman, and Grant Stonerook.
