Coates set to visit Iowa State

The 2010 Cyclone recruiting class included two players from Encino (CA) Crespi High School. Now the staff is hoping that one of their teammates decides to join them in a year as part of the 2011 class.

"Ben (Loth) and Pierce (Richardson) are definitely telling me a lot about Iowa State," said Reggie Coates. "I'm real interested because they have told me about how the coaching there is really good and how they really care about the players."

The 6-foot-1, 230-pound outside linebacker now has offers from Iowa State and Washington and is hearing from Arizona, Oregon, Nebraska, and LSU. He confirmed to Cyclone Sports Report that he will be heading to Iowa State in the near future.

"I'm going to be taking an unofficial visit to Iowa State with Pierce during our spring break which is the first week of April," said Coates.

Reggie says that he is looking forward to meeting Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads. "I got to talk with him on the phone recently and it went great," he said. "He sounded real excited and I could just tell that he was on my side and that he really wanted me to go to Iowa State but he wasn't pressuring me at all."

Coates recorded 12 sacks last season and he's already hungry for more next season. "They like my speed, quickness, and my athleticism but I definitely want to get strongrer and faster so that I can have a great senior year," he said.

Reggie likes that fact that if he did choose Iowa State that he would have two familiar faces around to show him the ropes.

"If I had a bad day or something I know Pierce and Ben would be there to help me or push me harder in football," he said. "They did that for me last season and they've definitely helped with getting me noticed by Iowa State so they would definitely be nothing but a big help."

While he is not sure when he will make his final decision, Reggie does know what lies in his future.

"Education will be the number one thing I look at when I make my final decision and I plan on likely red-shirting my first season because I want to get stronger and more prepared so that I can possibly play a lot and real well during the next season," said Coates. "I'm going to definitely wait for a while and it's possible that I won't make a decision until after my season ends."
