CSR Exclusive: One-on-one with Bo Barnes

Iowa State has targeted Phoenix (AZ) Westwind Prep International guard Bo Barnes to possibly fill one of their last remaining spots for their 2010 recruiting class. CSR caught up with Barnes to see where things currently stand with his recruitment.

"I don't have an offer from Iowa State but they have been recruiting me for a long time and Coach McDermott was just out today to watch me work out for about 45 minutes," said Barnes. "I will be going with my mom on a visit to Iowa State on April 9th and if I did receive an offer they would definitely be in my top three. The chance to play in a top three conference would be really great."

The 6-foot-4, 185-pound shooting guard has offers from Hawaii, Oral Roberts, Duquesne, LaSalle, St. Bonaventure, Albany, Rider, and Florida Gulf Coast.

"If Iowa State offered I would definitely consider going there but if not I would probably prefer to play somewhere in the west," said Barnes. "Coach Arnold from Hawaii was recruiting me when he was USC and wants me to come to Hawaii with him. These are the two schools that I have the most interest in but I'm still wanting to wait and see what happens over the next few weeks."

Barnes played his high school basketball at Scottsdale Christian Academy and was committed to play at Liberty. His plans changed when their head coach Ritchie McKay left the school. "I was going to play club and try and get some other scholarship offers but then I sprained my ankle really bad and it didn't heal quick enough so I just decided to play a year of prep basketball," said Barnes. " I play mostly the two and the three but most schools are just looking at me to play the two in college."

Iowa State's recruitment of Barnes started back during the winter due some great play by Barnes out east.

"I made the All-Tournament team at a prep tournament in Rhode Island and Coach Rutter was there from Iowa State and he started recruiting me soon after that," said Barnes. "He told me that they really like my ability to shoot the ball and that they really want to add a guard that can do that to their recruiting class."

Bo says that overall he really likes the Iowa State coaching staff.

"Coach Rutter is really nice and I've also had Coach McDermott and Coach Otzelberger recruiting me," he said. "Coach McDermott has told me that they are really interested in me and he said that he likes that besides shooting the ball that I can do other things. When he saw me play in Las Vegas he told me that he liked how I got on the floor for loose balls and that he likes my toughness."

Bo feels that a final decision will likely be made over the next month. "I plan on taking a few more visits and then making my decision," he said. "It will probably be made between April 11th and the 25th. I should know for sure by then about which school I want to play for."
