Phillips thrilled to hear from Hoiberg

Just hours after being named the new head coach at Iowa State, Fred Hoiberg was already getting to know his new players. Cyclone Sports Report talked with Marshalltown Community College guard DeMarcus Phillips about what his first discussion was like with his new coach.

"He just called to touch base on who he was and what his game plan was for next year," said Phillips. "I wasn't expecting it to happen this soon. I know he's real busy so for him to take the time to call me this soon means a lot and really shows the kind of person he is outside of coaching."

DeMarcus also liked what he heard about the type of offense that Hoiberg plans on running.

"He told me that he wants to really attack on offense," said Phillips. "He told me that we were going to get in and go and really spread things out and attack on offense. I was excited because that is exactly the type of offense that I like to run."

Phillips also is impressed by Coach Hoiberg's resume.

"He definitely knows what it takes to get to the league because he played in the NBA," he said. "It definitely brings another level of excitement to the program in that he has that pro experience and that he's an Iowa guy and knows what it takes to win. He made it clear when we were talking that he planned on helping Iowa State basketball get back to the top of the Big 12."

DeMarcus also said that he was very relieved when he heard that assistant coach T.J. Otzelberger would be joining Hoiberg's coaching staff.

"It was great news when I heard that Coach T.J. was staying," said Phillips. "It obviously meant a lot because I have really built a solid relationship with him."
