Steve Allen: I enjoyed the recruiting process and liked the fact that a lot of schools were interested in me. It wasn't a brain-buster or anything, because I knew I wanted to sign with Iowa State all along. I wasn't going to pick anyone over Iowa State. This summer, I plan on getting in shape, getting a little bigger and coming to Iowa State and being a big part of the program.
CN: What was it about Iowa State that had you picking it in the end?
Allen: The coaching staff. I really liked the way they talk to the players. I liked how the players got along. They tell you the truth about everything and I liked that a lot.
CN: How did Cyclone coach Marty Fine handle your recruiting?
Allen: It was a lot of fun. He joked around with me and was a fun guy to be around and talk to.
CN: How tough was it to see Owens sign with Minnesota?
Allen: I was alright with it. We had talked about it. I guess he wanted to go a different way. I wasn't upset about it. It would have been better if we went to the same school, because if something happens to one of us we'd have the other to talk to. But it doesn't matter to me, really.
CN: Do you two plan on keeping in touch while you're at Iowa State and he's up North?
Allen: Oh, yeah. We'll keep in touch.
CN: What do you have planned for the months ahead to prepare for the transition to Division I ball?
Allen: Right now I'm running track trying to get my speed up. I'm doing the 100 meters, 4x100, 200, long jump and shot put. My best event is probably the 4x100. My best is a 10.9, but I'm still trying to get it down. I'm also lifting weights. I'm just getting ready to play.
CN: Are there any certain experiences in high school you feel have best prepared you for college ball?
Allen: I would say the University of Georgia football camp. It's really different, because the coaches stayed on top of you. That was better for me, because it didn't let me make any mistakes. I'll be ready for it.
CN: What is your current height and weight?
Allen: Right now I'm 6-foot-1 and a half. I weigh 205 pounds.
CN: Have Iowa State coaches told you what position you'll play?
Allen: Outside linebacker.
CN: Tell us about your style of play. What are your strengths at linebacker?
Allen: Blitzing. I like to blitz. I like to sack the quarterback.
CN: When do you plan on reporting to Iowa State?
Allen: I really don't know right now, because I wanted to come up early and get situated with everything and then come back home. But I don't know. I have to talk to my parents and see what they think.
CN: What do you plan on majoring in?
