ISU targeting Florida safety

Fort Myers (FL) Dunbar High School's Champ Lewis is being looked at by the Iowa State coaching staff as a potential solid defensive addition to its 2011 recruiting class.

"Coach (Shane) Burnham came down and saw my practice and got film on me a while back," said Lewis. "They then offered me and I'm definitely interested in Iowa State. I have discussed with my family and I would love to go out of state because for me it would be something new."

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound safety currently holds offers from Iowa State, USF, Toledo, Maryland, Kentucky, and Western Kentucky. He told Cyclone Sports Report that the Iowa State coaches like his all-around game.

"Coach Burnham told me that they really like the way I make contact in the secondary," said Lewis. "They also like my coverage skills and that I'm just an all-around physical player."

Champ has not yet visited Iowa State but is hoping to either this summer or in the fall.

"I haven't made it up there but I really want to," he said. "I"m just looking for a place where I can compete to play right away. I currently have a visit set up to USF and I'll also be going to the Miami (Fla.) and South Carolina camps."
