CSR recruiting breakdown: QB

The Iowa State coaching staff is looking to build on a very solid 2010 recruiting class. One position that is not of major urgency for the 2011 class is at quarterback.

What Iowa State already has is:

A solid senior starting quarterback in Austen Arnaud that after dealing with two coaching changes during his career is possibly ready for a huge senior season. Austen now enters his second season under offensive coordinator Tom Herman's spread offensive scheme and has many weapons to throw to and an outstanding running back in Alexander Robinson to balance things out so as long as the offensive line gives him time it should be a solid 2011 season for the Ames native.

The player most people believe will replace Arnaud in 2011 is redshirt sophomore Jerome Tiller who was able to pick up some valuable experience during last season when Arnaud was hurt. The great thing for Iowa State coaches is that they are bringing in a freshman this season in Jared Barnett who should provide Tiller with big time competition over the next few seasons and if he outplays Tiller and wins the job next season he could end up starting at least three seasons at Iowa State.

The player who could surprise in the future is redshirt freshman James Capello who according to Herman has made great strides over the past season. He didn't come to Ames as highly rated as Tiller or Barnett but if he continues to develop he will definitely get a fair chance at starting for the 2011 season.

The fact that Iowa State has four solid quarterbacks on its roster is huge due to it being a position that sees a lot of players transfer throughout the country. Just recently at Ole Miss, their coaching staff even stooped to giving former Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli an opportunity to play for them when they saw the quarterback position on their roster reduced to two due to a player transfer.

What Iowa State needs:

The staff seems to be in good shape but due to injuries and transfers you can never have enough good quarterbacks. They need to continue to target players that fit well with Coach Herman's spread offense and so far most of the players that they are recruiting for 2011 class fit that bill. The staff will likely only look to add one quarterback but it wouldn't be shocking to see them grab two.

The four main quarterback targets at the moment are: Cameron Coffman, Raymore (MO) Raymore-Peculiar High School, Joshua Grady, Seffner (FL) Armwood High School, Sam Richardson, Winter Park (FL) Winter Park High School, and Reggie Garrett, Orange (TX) West Orange-Stark High School.
