CSR goes one-on-one with Sam Richardson

Cyclone Sports Report talks with League City (TX) Clear Springs High School's Sam Richardson who decided to end his recruitment this week and commit to play his college football for Iowa State.

Cyclone Sports Report: When did Iowa State start recruiting you?

Sam Richardson: They started looking at me last fall and kept on me all the way until I committed.

Cyclone Sports Report: So why did you choose to end your recruitment this week by picking Iowa State?

Sam Richardson: My family and I had been talking about it for a while so it was definitely not a rushed decision. I really liked that they didn't care about my size and just felt that they were getting a good football player. The fact that they believed in me from was important and I really liked the coaches. I'm also real excited to play in the Big 12. I feel that the Big 12 and the SEC are the place to be in regards to college football so I'm real excited to get the chance to play for Iowa State.

Cyclone Sports Report: What other schools were you considering?

Sam Richardson: Navy and Air Force. A lot of the other schools that were recruiting me hadn't offered because of my size.

Cyclone Sports Report: Do you feel you will be coming to Iowa State with a chip on your shoulder because some teams think you are too small at 5-foot-7, 170-pounds?

Sam Richardson: I wouldn't say I'll have a chip on my shoulder but I play with a lot of confidence. In going to Iowa State I'm very confident that I can compete on the highest level.

Cyclone Sports Report: What are your thoughts on the Iowa State coaches?

Sam Richardson: The two coaches I have spoken to the most are Coach Pope and Coach Rhoads. Coach Pope and I speak about once a week or he'll send me an e-mail or a letter. We have really gotten to know each other well and I'm real comfortable with him. I speak to Coach Rhoads every now and then and he reminds me a lot of Coach Hartman who is my high school coach and they even talk the same. So I'm real excited to play for him.

Cyclone Sports Report: What did the coaches tell you that they liked most about your game?

Sam Richardson: They have said that they like my speed and that they like that I can play tough man coverage. They also have told me that I play bigger than my size.

Cyclone Sports Report: You have yet to take a visit to Iowa State. Have you scheduled an official visit?

Sam Richardson: Yeah, we are looking into it with the coaches and it looks like I'll be coming up for a game in September.
