Cyclones land Houston wide receiver

Houston (TX) St.Pius X High School's Tad Ecby committed to Iowa State this past Saturday and one key reason was that he feels like he can start making an impact at Iowa State as early as the 2011 season.

"I was mostly recruited by Coach Herman and one thing he kept telling me was that I would have the opportunity to come in and compete to play right away," said Ecby. "He said that over the next couple of years they'll be losing many of their ‘X' wide receivers and that I could be a player who could come in and stretch the field and also get first downs when needed."

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound wide receiver chose Iowa State over offers from Minnesota, Houston, and SMU.

He told Cyclone Sports Report that by choosing Iowa State he is fulfilling a childhood dream.

"It's crazy because growing up in Texas it was always a dream for me to play in the Big 12 and now I'm going to get to do that," said Ecby. "It really had a lot to do with it because now I'll get to play some road games each year back in Texas so many of my family and friends from my hometown can come see me play."

Tad was not expecting this past weekend but a talk Coach Rhoads got him thinking.

"I was just calling Coach Herman to catch up on things and then he told me that Coach Rhoads wanted to talk with me and we had a really good talk," said Ecby. "He just seems like a genuine guy who wants to win and he really seems like he knows what he is doing. So my parents and I talked after my call with the Iowa State coaches and I just felt it was the right place for me so I called Coach Rhoads back and chose to commit."

Tad has also connected with a fellow Houston-native currently playing for the Cyclones.

"My new head basketball coach knows Jerrod Black really well so a couple of days ago he got us in contact with each other," he said. "Jerrod just told me that Iowa State is a great school and that he thought I would really enjoy my time there. He also told me that the coaches are genuine and that I will be welcomed by everyone in the program with open arms."

Tad has not been to Ames yet but he is looking forward to his official visit which is coming up soon.

"I'll be coming up on September 24th for the weekend to see them play Northern Iowa," said Ecby.
