CSR talks with David Irving

Cyclone Sports Report was first to break the news that San Jacinto (CA) High School's David Irving had committed to Iowa State. Now we go one-on-one with the underrated defensive end on why his visit to Ames was so important and how one of the most popular Cyclones helped in providing important insight into what he can expect when he finally arrives at Iowa State.

Cyclone Sports Report: What was the injury that limited you to only five games last season?

David Irving: I suffered a neck injury but now I'm fully recovered.

Cyclone Sports Report: You still had six sacks during those five games that you played. Did Iowa State recruit you only as a defensive end or are they considering moving you inside to play tackle?

David Irving: Yeah, I think they want to keep me at defensive end. I can play defensive tackle but I prefer defensive end. I'll be going out there in June or July to get started which is important because they said they want to beef me up before next season. That will be key because they said I could challenge for playing time as a freshman and I really want to make a big impact at Iowa State.

Cyclone Sports Report: What were the other schools that you strongly considered besides Iowa State?

David Irving: Nevada and Colorado State

Cyclone Sports Report: Who was the main Iowa State assistant coach that was recruiting you and what did the Cyclone staff like about you that led to an offer?

David Irving: Coach Elliott had seen my film and so he is the one that was recruiting me. He said that staff likes my athleticism and speed for my size. They like how I read the field and feel I can both rush the quarterback and drop in coverage. They also liked that I blocked four field goals last year.

Cyclone Sports Report: How important was your visit to Ames in you deciding to commit to Iowa State?

David Irving: It was huge because coming from California you kind of think that Ames, Iowa might be in the middle of nowhere. When I flew in I noticed right away that there was a big city like Des Moines pretty close and then when I was at Iowa State I really felt it was a great campus. The hang out spots were a lot of fun. I got to hang with Austen Arnaud a lot and he told me that I would have a really good time at Iowa State. He said that you'll get a good education when you come here and that the coaches really take care of you as players. He also told me that it's great because you are always playing against good teams.

Cyclone Sports Report: What are your thoughts on Coach Rhoads?

David Irving: I thought he was a pretty cool guy and he spent a lot of time with me during my visit which I really liked because I had a couple other visits where the coaches didn't do that. I feel like it's a big bonus that he was defensive coordinator at Pittsburgh and Auburn before he came to Iowa State because he knows how to run a defense and that should really help me. He came in and led them to an Insight Bowl victory which is just crazy because that's major progress in just one year after only winning two games the year before.

Cyclone Sports Report: Have you set a date for your official visit to Iowa State?

David Irving: Yeah, I'm coming out in October for the Texas Tech game.
