David Walker continued his stretch as the strongest man on the team, almost nearing 500 pounds in his bench. Many have already penciled David in for the starting left guard spot possibly forming the scariest duo in the nation on the left side alongside Robert Gallery.
Abdul Hodge, Edmond Miles, and George Lewis continued to set high marks for the linebacker corps with bench presses over 400 pounds. The current linebacker group is clearly one of the strongest to ever put on the Hawkeye uniform!
Antwan Allen has put some weight on during the off-season getting up over 175, and quickly approaching 180. The staff will hope to have Antwan near 185-190 by next fall. He has also shown improvement in the weight room. The same can be said for Jovon Johnson, whom has passed the 170 pound mark on his way up to 180.
Maurice Brown and Jermelle Lewis have both added strength and some more size to their already impressive physiques. Some NFL scouts have already stated that Maurice has shown a lot of similarities as recently signed Charger WR David Boston. However, the scouts will be looking to see more open field playmaking this fall from Maurice to go along with his deep threat abilities. Maurice reportedly is working on improving his 4.48 time last spring into the high 4.3's.
The word around Iowa City has been the move of CJ Barkema to the offensive line has gone very smoothly. CJ has shown no problems in adding weight, and by next fall many believe he can be over 290. Its believed CJ will work out early at right tackle, but could get some looks at guard as well. Both CJ and the staff are very excited to see his abilities on the practice field this spring.
Like stated before on HTO.com, the Hawkeyes are being very picky before extending early offers this spring to many 2003 prospects. The two most critical areas will be at the quarterback position and in regards to the in-state talent. No offers have been extended yet to any quarterbacks, but the first names to pop to mind would be Chase Patton, Liam O'Hagen, and Brent Schaeffer.
I will be doing a follow-up shortly, but some have indicated Iowa State has extended an offer to Cedar Rapids Washington LB Maurice Cantrell. Arguably the second best prospect on the squad behind WR Adrian Arrington, he will likely field offers from a few midwest programs this year. Could the Hawkeyes be next to extend an offer?
Iowa will be looking to sign five offensive lineman and two or three cornerbacks in this recruiting class. Iowa has alerady extended early offers to Cortney Grixby, Ted Ginn, Jr., and Brandon Robinson at cornerback. Right now, their hopes are to land at least one of the talented trio!
