Tyler Marz began what might become a longtime relationship with the University of Iowa during the last month. A few weeks ago, he received a call from Hawkeye recruiting coordinator Eric Johnson. On Saturday, he watched Iowa steam roll rival Iowa State at Kinnick Stadium.
"It was a fun trip," the Class of 2011 Minnesota Offensive Lineman said. "I left after my game on Friday. We made it to Mason City then drove the rest of the way (Saturday) morning.
"It was a five-hour drive but worth it. The place was packed. It was sweet. It would be awesome to play there."
The 6-foot-8, 280-pound Marz holds scholarship offers from Minnesota, Wisconsin and South Dakota State. He's talking about one with the Hawkeyes.
"They haven't offered yet," the Springfield (MN) Secondary School product said. "They say they're real interested and would like to see film from my first two games this season. They haven't said whether or not they're going to offer at a certain time or anything.
"They said that one of the coaches will call me to touch base this week and see how I liked the visit."
Johnson has been talking with Marz on the phone and they spoke in person this weekend. The prospect also met with line coach Reese Morgan for quite a while.
"They're both really great guys," Marz said. "Coach Johnson was the one that called me last week to see if I wanted to come down."
Marz visited Wisconsin and Minnesota unofficially this summer. His brothers went to SDSU, so he has familiarity with that school.
Sprinfield claims a population of about 2,200 people. Marz also plays basketball and baseball at the small school.
