Hawkeyes Haul in 2011 Texas Linebacker

The Iowa football team secured its 15th verbal commitment in the class of 2011. Allen (Tx) High linebacker Melvin Spears made the call for the Hawkeyes after officially visiting for the Penn State game last weekend.

Allen High Defensive Coordinator Cory Cain and school athletics director Steve Williams confirmed on Friday morning that a linebacker at their school, Melvin Spears, verbally committed to the University of Iowa.

Spears, Scout.com's 53rd ranked middle linebacker in the Class of 2011, officially visited Iowa City last weekend for the Penn State game. Scout.com rates him as a three-star recruit on it's five-star scale.

Spears chose the Hawkeyes ahead of offers from Minnesota and Arkansas State. He becomes the 15th known verbal commitment for Iowa in the class.

Allen ranks as one of the top programs in the talent-rich state of Texas. The Eagles are 5-0 this season.
